Statement by Sgt. Samuel Brown (25 Nov 1865) on the death of John Kline.

John served with Co E, 142nd PA Inf. (Pvt). Mustered in 28 Aug 1862. Wounded and missing 6 May 1864. Supposed dead -- Battle of the Wilderness. POW report says no record susequent to 7 May 1864. Casualty sheet dates death as "from 5 to 20 May 1864." In a statement, Sgt. Samuel Brown (Nov 25, 1865) said, "7th day of May 1864, in the second days of battle of the Wilderness. Sometime in the afternoon the Regiment advancing through a wood of close undergrowth, came suddenly upon the Rebels, concealed, who opened heavily upon the Regiment. Under withering fire the line staggered and retreated. In the retreat he passed by the said John Kline setting/leaning against a tree, desperately wounded in the thigh, close up to the hip, and his leg turned back -- he spoke to him, and straightened his limb - gave him some water - he was bleeding profusely, very much exhausted, and with no likelihood of his living. The rebels were in full pursuit and he had to be abandoned, and was never seen from that time. The affiant believes from th nature of the wound, and all the circumstances surrounding him that he died there - the ground was occupied by the rebels and the wounded could not be brought out or succored. He was alone with him when he left him - the others having retreated."
